Recipe for healthy dogs

Topper especially seems to have a sensitive stomach and can’t tolerate most medication. They have both suffered from the runs periodically. We have tried high-end canned foods, but feel the gravy base is too rich and who knows what is really in those cans anyway? We have found that the best diet is dry food in the morning (we use Blue Buffalo Brown Rice and Chicken) and for dinner they get a mixture of lean ground beef, rice, green beans, and carrots. They get so excited when they see the big green bowl I mix it up in!

Here is my recipe:

  • 1 cup browned ground beef (95% lean if possible)
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1/4 cup green beans (cooked and cut into small pieces)
  • 1/4 cup carrots (cooked and cut into small pieces)
  • 1/2 sweet potato (cooked)

After combining in bowl, I microwave to take the chill off. Initially, I serve 1/3 of the mixture to Topper and 1/3 of the mixture to Daisy. Then after Topper gobbles his down, I quickly give him the rest before Daisy notices. I usually cook one pound of meat at a time, which lasts for three days. It is easy to pack the ingredients up in plastic containers for travel. Their weight, energy, and overall health seems to have improved dramatically on this regimen–we will see what the vet says when Daisy gets her check-up next week. (Actually, it was our vet that recommended the gound beef and rice combo as a remedy for their digestive issues, and we added the veggies to make it even more appetizing.)


As a follow-up, the vet said she had never seen Topper in such great shape. He was typically very itchy and his pads were often irritated. We definitely attribute it to his change in diet.
